Abstract: This talk will focus on several active land surface modeling projects in development at the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Research Application Laboratory. These topics are arranged in three parts: model structure/physics development focusing on groundwater, urban and agricultural (crop/irrigation), dataset development and the challenge of using satellite data in new land models, and next generation land modeling at NCAR. Model development will focus on addressing existing biases in the WRF model and the challenges of including more complex processes in land surface models. The land data discussion will focus on evolving land model structure and how that will affect land data assimilation moving forward. Finally, the consolidation of land modeling efforts at NCAR will be shown in the context of focusing model development and preventing model proliferation.
